Privacy

MealSage is an independent app made in Saskatchewan, Canada. Our privacy contact is responsible for how MealSage handles personal information. You can reach them at mealsage.app@gmail.com or by post at [MAILING ADDRESS].
The short version
- The app keeps your household, plans, pantry, logs and recipes in your own browser. We don't receive them.
- We only get information about you if you join the email list or send a problem report.
- No ads, no analytics, no tracking cookies. We don't sell your information or share it for advertising, and we don't use it to train AI.
What stays on your device
Early access saves what you enter in your browser's storage on this device: the people in your household (including any children you add) and their age, sex, height, weight, body fat, activity, goals and allergies; your plans, pantry, prices, food logs, workouts, notes and recipes; and your colour settings. None of it is sent to us or anyone else unless you choose to include some of it in a problem report (see below).
The app needs this storage to work, so there's no cookie banner. Because it lives only in this browser, clearing your browser's data deletes it, and it doesn't move to other devices. In Settings, under "Your data", you can download a copy, restore one, or delete everything with "Start over".
The email list
If you join the list, we keep your email address so we can tell you when the full app opens and send occasional updates. We only email you because you said yes. The list is run by Kit, an email service, which stores your address for us. Kit also receives your IP address when you sign up, and records whether you open the emails and click links in them.
Every email has an unsubscribe link, or you can email us. We stop emailing you as soon as you unsubscribe, and always within 10 business days. Ask, and we'll delete your address completely.
Problem reports
If you use "Report a problem", we receive:
- what you write;
- the time, the page you were on, the app version, your screen size, and your browser and device type;
- your country, your units and how many people are in your household;
- recent error messages from the app, if there were any.
If you tick the box, we also receive your plan, pantry, prices and settings, including each person's calorie and protein targets and whether they're under 18. Names, ages, body measurements, allergies, food logs, workouts, notes and your own recipes are left out.
Reports are sent through Netlify, the company that hosts MealSage. Netlify also records your IP address with the report and checks it for spam with an automated service, and a copy is emailed to the MealSage inbox (Gmail). We use reports only to fix MealSage and delete them within 12 months. If you'd like a reply, put your email address in the message. Please don't include anything you'd rather we didn't see.
What any visit sends
- Netlify hosts the site. Like any web host, its servers see your IP address, your browser type and the pages you load, and keep short-term logs to run the service and keep it secure.
- Fonts, pictures and everything else the pages need come from our own site, not from other companies.
- Links to recipe sources, photo credits and licences open other websites, which get the same kind of information any website gets.
Where it's kept
Netlify, Kit and Google (which runs the Gmail inbox) are based in the United States and may process information there or in other countries. They handle it for us under their data-processing terms, which include safeguards for international transfers. Information held outside your country can be accessed by authorities there under local law.
Legal basis (UK)
The email list relies on your consent. Problem reports rely on our legitimate interest in fixing MealSage, and the optional plan details on your consent. Hosting relies on our legitimate interest in running a working, secure website.
Children
MealSage is meant for adults. You can add children to your household so their portions fit; their details stay on your device and are left out of problem reports. Please don't let children under 13 join the email list or send reports.
Your rights
You can ask what we hold about you, ask us to correct or delete it, ask for a copy, or withdraw your consent, for example by unsubscribing. Email mealsage.app@gmail.com. We'll confirm we've got your request within a few days and answer within 30 days. There's no charge.
If you're unhappy with how we've handled your information, please tell us first and we'll try to put it right. You can also complain to your privacy regulator: the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (in Quebec, the Commission d'accès à l'information), the UK Information Commissioner's Office, the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner, or New Zealand's Office of the Privacy Commissioner.
If something goes wrong
If a security problem puts your information at risk, we'll tell you and the regulators as the law requires.
Changes
Accounts, syncing between devices and a paid plan are on the way, and they'll mean storing some of your information on servers. We'll update this page before any of that goes live, and ask for your permission where it's needed. The date at the top shows the last change.
